Expert rank-wise guidance for B.Tech, Dual Degree & Integrated M.Tech admission to all 23 IITs. We cover Category Rank Lists, branch+campus strategy, and the JoSAA rounds that decide your final IIT and branch.
JEE Advanced is the second-stage national entrance exam, conducted on a rotating basis by one of the IITs, required exclusively for admission to the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology. Only a qualifying bracket of JEE Main rank holders may attempt it.
Unlike JEE Main, your result here is declared directly as a rank within your Category Rank List (CRL) — General/CRL, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS and PwBD lists are maintained separately, each with its own cutoff for every IIT-branch combination.
JEE Advanced is structurally simpler than JEE Main in one sense: clearing it means an IIT seat is realistic somewhere — the real decision is which IIT and which branch, since the gap between a top-rank branch (Computer Science at IIT Bombay) and an accessible one (a core branch at a newer IIT) is enormous.
Conducted by a rotating IIT each year, JEE Advanced is considerably more conceptual than JEE Main, typically across two compulsory papers on the same day.
Eligibility is tightly linked to your JEE Main performance — this is not a standalone exam you can register for independently.
Not all IITs are equally hard to get into for every branch — tiers shift by branch, not just by overall institute reputation.
Approximate relative difficulty using your Category Rank List position. Actual opening/closing ranks shift every year — treat this as a starting framework, not exact numbers.
| Branch + Tier | Examples | Relative Difficulty | Typical CRL Rank Band* |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSE — Top-5 IITs | CSE at Bombay/Delhi/Madras/Kanpur/Kharagpur | 🔴 Very Hard | Top few hundred |
| Core Branches — Top-5 IITs | Mechanical/Electrical/Civil at top-5 IITs | 🔴 Hard | Low thousands |
| CSE — Mid-Tier IITs | CSE at Roorkee, Guwahati, Hyderabad, BHU | 🟡 Moderate–Hard | Few thousand |
| Core Branches — Mid-Tier IITs | Core engineering at established mid-tier IITs | 🟡 Moderate | ~5,000–12,000 |
| CSE — Newer IITs | CSE at post-2008 IITs | 🟢 Accessible | ~10,000–20,000 |
| Core Branches — Newer IITs | Core branches at newer IITs | 🟢 Most Accessible | Often 15,000–35,000+ |
*Illustrative bands for General/CRL category only — OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS rank lists have separate, generally more accessible cutoffs at each IIT-branch combination. Always check the specific institute + branch + category + round combination on the official JoSAA portal.
JEE Advanced doesn't run separate counselling — IIT seats are allocated through the same JoSAA platform used for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs, with your IIT eligibility layered on top.
