What Is It

Law Admissions Explained

CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is the dominant national exam for law admission in India, with a genuinely centralised counselling process — but one major National Law University sits entirely outside it, and a large private/state college landscape exists alongside it.

CLAT feeds a consortium counselling process covering 21 of the 22 National Law Universities (NLUs) — you fill preferences across these NLUs and seats are allotted by rank, broadly similar in spirit to JoSAA. NLU Delhi is the exception — it runs its own separate exam, AILET, and does not participate in CLAT counselling at all.

Beyond the NLUs, many private law schools (Jindal Global Law School and others) and state institutions run their own separate admission processes — some accepting CLAT scores, some using LSAT India, and some via state-level CETs or direct merit.

⚖️
CLAT — The National Exam
Conducted by the Consortium of NLUs, CLAT result is declared as an All India Rank, used for centralised seat allocation across 21 NLUs.
🏛️
NLU Delhi — The Exception
NLU Delhi does not accept CLAT — admission is exclusively through its own AILET exam, a fact that surprises many CLAT-focused aspirants.
🎓
5-Year vs 3-Year Programmes
5-year integrated programmes (B.A. LL.B and variants) follow Class 12 directly; 3-year LL.B is a graduate-entry route after any bachelor's degree.
🏢
A Wide World Beyond NLUs
Private law schools, state law colleges and university law departments offer strong options via LSAT India, state CETs, or direct merit — not every good law degree requires an NLU seat.
The Key Distinction

CLAT Consortium vs Everything Else

🌐
CLAT Consortium — Centralised
One exam, one rank, one preference-filling counselling process across 21 NLUs — the closest law admissions get to a JoSAA-style unified system.
🧩
Everything Else — Fragmented
AILET (NLU Delhi), LSAT India (several private schools), state CETs, and direct-merit private colleges each run independently — you may need to register for more than one exam.
Why Vidyapaath

Why Law Aspirants Choose Us

Litigation, corporate law, judiciary, civil services — we discuss where each path actually leads before you commit to a college.
Entrance Exams

CLAT, AILET & LSAT India Compared

Each exam opens a different set of doors — know which ones you actually need.

⚖️
CLAT
Tests English Language, Current Affairs & GK, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques — result declared as marks and an All India Rank, used by the 21-NLU consortium plus many other accepting colleges.
🏛️
AILET
NLU Delhi's own entrance exam, covering similar subject areas to CLAT but run completely independently — required specifically and only for NLU Delhi's UG, PG and PhD programmes.
🌍
LSAT India
Accepted by Jindal Global Law School and a number of other private law schools — distinct question format from CLAT, with a stronger emphasis on logical and analytical reasoning.
🗺️
State Law CETs
Several states (Maharashtra's CET, among others) run their own law entrance test for state government and university law colleges, separate from CLAT entirely.
Eligibility

Who Can Apply

🎓
5-Year Integrated — Class 12, Any Stream
Open to Class 12 passouts from any stream (Science, Commerce or Arts) with a minimum aggregate, commonly around 45-50% and relaxed for reserved categories.
📜
3-Year LL.B — Any Bachelor's Degree
Open to graduates of any bachelor's degree, in any discipline, meeting the minimum aggregate required by the specific exam and institute.
📅
Age & Attempt Rules Vary by Exam
Age limits and number of attempts have been revised over recent years across different exams — always verify the current notification for your specific exam and target institute rather than assuming a fixed rule.
National Law Universities

NLU Tiers

All NLUs share the brand, but reputation, placement strength and CLAT cutoffs vary meaningfully by institute.

🥇
The Top-Tier NLUs
NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad and WBNUJS Kolkata are consistently the most sought-after within the CLAT consortium, with the toughest cutoffs across nearly every category.
🏛️
NLU Delhi — Separate Track
Widely regarded among the top NLUs by reputation, but admitted exclusively via AILET — a completely separate application and exam from the CLAT consortium.
🥈
Established Mid-Tier NLUs
NLU Jodhpur, GNLU Gandhinagar, NLIU Bhopal and similar — strong placement records with meaningfully more accessible cutoffs than the top tier.
🥉
Newer NLUs
NLUs established more recently are still building placement reputations — often the most accessible NLU-brand option for a moderate CLAT rank.
Beyond the NLUs

Other Strong Law Colleges

🌍
Jindal Global Law School
A leading private law school admitting via LSAT India and its own process, known for strong international exposure and faculty diversity.
🏫
Symbiosis Law School
Admits via its own entrance test (SLAT) — a well-regarded private option with campuses across multiple cities.
🏛️
ILS Law College, Pune
One of India's oldest law colleges, with a strong legacy reputation, admitting through Maharashtra's state CET process.
🏛️
Government Law College, Mumbai
A historic government law college with low fees and strong alumni network, admitted through Maharashtra's state CET.
NLU Consortium

How CLAT Counselling Works

After CLAT results, the consortium runs a preference-based seat allocation process across 21 NLUs, with multiple rounds.

📝
Preference Filling
After your CLAT rank is declared, you fill a priority list of NLU+programme preferences across all 21 participating universities in one unified form.
🔄
Multiple Allocation Rounds
Seats are allotted across several rounds, with options to accept, upgrade or withdraw at each stage as higher-rank candidates move between NLUs.
💳
Fee Payment Deadlines
Each round carries a fee-payment and document-upload deadline — missing it typically forfeits the allotted seat, similar to other national counselling systems.
🚫
NLU Delhi Stays Separate
Throughout this entire process, NLU Delhi runs its own independent AILET-based admission on its own timeline — it is never part of the CLAT consortium rounds.
Documents

CLAT/AILET Scorecard

👥
Category Certificates
OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS/PwBD certificates with current validity in the prescribed format, where applicable.
💳
Seat Acceptance Fee Receipt
Proof of fee payment within the deadline for whichever round you've been allotted a seat in.
Rank Patterns

NLU Tier Difficulty — Illustrative Bands

Approximate relative difficulty across NLU tiers, based on recent CLAT trends. Actual closing ranks shift every year — treat this as a starting framework, not exact figures.

Tier Examples Relative Difficulty Typical CLAT Rank Band (Gen)*
Top-Tier NLUsNLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, WBNUJS Kolkata🔴 Very HardTop few hundred
Established Mid-Tier NLUsNLU Jodhpur, GNLU Gandhinagar, NLIU Bhopal🔴 HardLow thousands
Good Mid-Tier NLUsHNLU Raipur, RGNUL Patiala, RMLNLU Lucknow🟡 Moderate–Hard~2,000–4,000
Newer NLUsNLUs established in the last decade🟢 Accessible~4,000–8,000+

*Illustrative bands for General category only — OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS lists have separate, generally more accessible cutoffs. NLU Delhi (AILET) is excluded from this table since it uses a completely separate rank system from CLAT. Always check the specific NLU + programme + round combination on the official consortium portal before deciding.

A Note on AILET

NLU Delhi's Rank System Is Separate

🔀
Don't Compare CLAT and AILET Ranks Directly
A CLAT rank of 500 and an AILET rank of 500 represent entirely different applicant pools and difficulty levels — treat them as two unrelated numbers, not equivalent measures.
📋
Prepare for Both If NLU Delhi Is a Target
If NLU Delhi is genuinely on your list, you need to register for and prepare for AILET specifically — a strong CLAT rank alone does not grant any consideration there.
Where It Leads

Career Paths After Law School

A law degree opens far more doors than courtroom litigation alone.

⚖️
Litigation
Practicing in courts, building toward a career as an advocate — typically starting under a senior advocate or in a litigation-focused law firm.
🏢
Corporate Law & Law Firms
Top NLU graduates frequently enter large corporate law firms handling mergers, acquisitions, and commercial transactions — among the highest-paying early-career law paths.
⚖️
Judiciary
Becoming a judge via state Judicial Services Examinations — a separate competitive exam taken after completing your law degree, leading to a judicial career.
🏛️
In-House Counsel
Working within a company's legal department, handling contracts, compliance and corporate governance — a stable, increasingly popular career track.
📚
Civil Services
A law background pairs well with UPSC and other civil services preparation — the analytical and constitutional grounding from law school is genuinely useful here.
🎓
Academia & Research
Teaching and legal research positions at law schools and think tanks, typically pursued via an LL.M and often a PhD for senior academic roles.
💡
NLU Tier Matters Most for Corporate Law Recruitment
Top corporate law firms recruit heavily from the top-tier NLUs specifically — if that's your goal, the NLU you attend matters more than in most other career paths from law school. For litigation, judiciary or civil services, your own preparation and performance after graduation matter considerably more than which specific NLU you attended.
