What Is It

Law Admissions Explained

CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is the dominant national exam for law admission in India, with a genuinely centralised counselling process — but one major National Law University sits entirely outside it, and a large private/state college landscape exists alongside it.

CLAT feeds a consortium counselling process covering 21 of the 22 National Law Universities (NLUs) — you fill preferences across these NLUs and seats are allotted by rank, broadly similar in spirit to JoSAA. NLU Delhi is the exception — it runs its own separate exam, AILET, and does not participate in CLAT counselling at all.

Beyond the NLUs, many private law schools (Jindal Global Law School and others) and state institutions run their own separate admission processes — some accepting CLAT scores, some using LSAT India, and some via state-level CETs or direct merit.

5-Year Integrated — Class 12, Any Stream

Open to Class 12 passouts from any stream (Science, Commerce or Arts) with a minimum aggregate, commonly around 45-50% and relaxed for reserved categories.

3-Year LL.B — Any Bachelor's Degree

Open to graduates of any bachelor's degree, in any discipline, meeting the minimum aggregate required by the specific exam and institute.

Age & Attempt Rules Vary by Exam

Age limits and number of attempts have been revised over recent years across different exams — always verify the current notification for your specific exam and target institute rather than assuming a fixed rule.

All NLUs share the brand, but reputation, placement strength and CLAT cutoffs vary meaningfully by institute.

Mark sheets and passing certificates appropriate to your programme — Class 12 for the 5-year route, bachelor's degree certificates for the 3-year route.

A CLAT rank of 500 and an AILET rank of 500 represent entirely different applicant pools and difficulty levels — treat them as two unrelated numbers, not equivalent measures.

If NLU Delhi is genuinely on your list, you need to register for and prepare for AILET specifically — a strong CLAT rank alone does not grant any consideration there.

Top corporate law firms recruit heavily from the top-tier NLUs specifically — if that's your goal, the NLU you attend matters more than in most other career paths from law school. For litigation, judiciary or civil services, your own preparation and performance after graduation matter considerably more than which specific NLU you attended.
