FAQs

B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) — Common Questions

Is NATA the same as JEE Main for B.Arch?+
No — they are different tests for different institutions. NATA (by CoA) is required for most government and private architecture schools. JEE Main Paper 2A specifically covers NIT B.Arch seats via JoSAA. Many students appear in both to maximise options.
How many times is NATA conducted in a year?+
NATA is typically conducted twice a year — Session 1 in April and Session 2 in July/August. The best of the two NATA scores is considered for admission by most colleges. Check the CoA website for current year schedule.
Is B.Arch difficult?+
B.Arch is unique — it demands both left-brain (structural analysis, building science) and right-brain (creative design, spatial thinking) abilities. The design studio workload is heavy, especially in years 2–4. However, passionate students find it deeply rewarding.
Can I become an architect without NATA?+
If you are applying only to NIT architecture programmes via JEE Main Paper 2A, NATA is not required. However, for all other government and private schools, NATA is compulsory as mandated by the Council of Architecture.
What is the CoA registration requirement to practice architecture?+
After completing a CoA-recognized B.Arch degree, you must register with the Council of Architecture to legally call yourself an "Architect" and offer architectural services independently in India. The registration requires the degree certificate and submission of practical training documentation.
Is B.Arch available at IIT Kharagpur?+
Yes — IIT KGP is one of the few IITs with a B.Arch programme. Admission is through JEE Advanced (Architecture branch). IIT KGP also offers M.Arch. The programme combines IIT's engineering rigour with design studio culture.
