From IIM Trichy (Tiruchirappalli) to top private B-schools — we help Tamil Nadu MBA aspirants shortlist realistic options, prepare for WAT-GD-PI, and manage multiple parallel applications across CAT, TANCET and other exams.
Key facts about the MBA landscape, IIM options, and admission routes for Tamil Nadu aspirants.
Your CAT percentile opens multiple B-school tiers — here's how to think about what's realistic.
IIM and B-school shortlisting percentiles shift annually based on applicant pool and institutional criteria changes. Always check the current year's official shortlisting notifications — not previous-year data.
Approximate shortlisting ranges. Actual cutoffs vary by profile, category and year — treat as a starting framework only.
*General category illustrative ranges only. OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS have more accessible cutoffs at all IIMs. Profile factors (academics, work experience, diversity) can shift shortlisting significantly — a 93%ile with a strong profile may beat a 97%ile with a weak one at certain IIMs.
CAT is not the only route — here's the full exam landscape for Tamil Nadu students.
The primary exam for all IIMs and 100+ other B-schools. Register in August. A single sitting with one result — no January retake like JEE Main. Prepare for Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude.
Required for XLRI Jamshedpur and accepted by ~100 B-schools. Has a unique Decision Making section not tested in CAT. Register separately — do not assume CAT registration covers XAT.
Required for SIBM Pune, SCMHRD, SIIB and other Symbiosis institutes. A completely separate exam and registration from CAT. If Symbiosis is on your list, register for SNAP explicitly.
Required for NMIMS Mumbai and campuses. Unique — offers multiple attempts within a testing window. If NMIMS is a target, plan NMAT timing carefully alongside CAT preparation.
TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test) — for state government MBA colleges. This is a separate registration and exam from CAT — required specifically for state MBA colleges in Tamil Nadu. Plan the timeline alongside national exams.
Your percentile only earns a shortlist call — this is where the actual seat is won or lost.
